Charles came to the desert in 1998 to visit friends Pat and Eric Larson. During that week he fell in love with hiking, decided to retire from college teaching, purchased a condo in Palm Springs, bought a used car and joined the CVHC. It has been a happy retirement ever since as his life here is dominated by hiking and advocating for public access to hiking trails. He has been a hike leader since 2001 and served as Club President from 2004 to 2010.
Charles is a board member of the Desert Trails Coalition and served as president from 2005 to 2012. This trails group is comprised of representatives of the valley's largest hiking, biking and equestrian clubs who come together to speak as one and negotiate more effectively with government agencies. He also has served on the Trails Management Subcommittee since 2008.
This "gang of 24" contains government agency people and elected private citizens who develop and recommend recreation trails policies that govern our valleys trail system. His current pet project is trails restoration, or eliminating short cuts that scar the landscape and erode our trails. Charles and Tracy?s desert passions include the January Palms Springs International Film Festival and March Indian Wells BNP Paribas Tennis Open. In the summer, they get their Chicago urban fix as well as hiking and traveling abroad. These "road warriors" love to drive back and forth each year between the mid-west and California, stopping along the way to eat, shop, sight see and, of course, hike.
