Dead Indian Canyon
Dead Indian Canyon is one of the group of canyons which are open for only the last three months of each year. The hike begins at Art Smith parking lot and follows the southern edge of the Art Smith basin before entering the wash at the mouth of Dead Indian Canyon. Our route follows the soft sand floor of the wash until we reach the point where the old Art Smith trail side canyon heads northwest. From there we use a sand platform to avoid some rocks and reach where the canyon starts to climb through a field of scattered granite boulders. At this point, part of our group might choose to wait while a smaller group tackles the boulder scramble needed to reach the oasis at the head of the canyon. We then return to the parking lot via a trail which parallels our route into the canyon.
Along the way we will see desert willows, smoke trees, datura, acacia and many lizards. If we are lucky we may encounter a flock of bighorns! Shade is limited and there is no water in this canyon. Bring plenty of water, dress for sun exposure and have snacks handy to keep your energy up.
