CANYON VIEW LOOP TO RED DOME
The Canyon View Loop trail in Whitewater Preserve passes through a lush riverside environment and then ascends to a heather-covered plateau with excellent views of the Whitewater Canyon and San Gorgonio mountain. Bighorn sheep can often be seen on the hilltops. At the intersection of the Canyon View Loop Trail and the Pacific Crest Trail (PCT), the hike follows the PCT to Red Dome, a distinctive feature on the banks of the Whitewater River. After the hike, you may wish to visit the displays in the ranger station or have a picnic lunch by the pond.
Hikers should be in good physical condition and able to walk at a quick pace (2-2.5 mph) for 3 – 4 hours. There is minimal shade on the southern portion of the trail. Bring extra water to stay well hydrated.
Meet at the Canyon Loop trailhead, near where the river crosses the road before you get to the Ranger Station. The Ranger Station is just inside the gated entrance to Whitewater Preserve (9160 Whitewater Canyon Road, Whitewater, CA). Washrooms are available at the trailhead.
