ART SMITH TO FIRST PALM OASIS

This trail is an in-and-out hike. It starts with a short section of fairly steep switch backs, after which hikers are rewarded with sweeping views of the valley.  From there, the trail continues to wind its way uphill, eventually becoming more rolling with gentle slopes. We will stop for a snack break at the 1st oasis before taking the trail back down into the valley.

The trail is very sunny, so be sure to bring plenty of water along and sun protection. Don’t forget your hiking poles!

8:00 am start.  Meet at the parking area on the right (west) side of Highway 74, where the highway curves to the left, just past the Bighorn Community. If you reach the actual Art Smith parking lot, you have gone too far. The hike should take about 2.5 hours to complete.

  • Altitude gain: 1,200 feet
  • Distance: 4.0 miles
  • Pace: Casual
  • Terrain: Switchbacks on packed trails, some steps up and down
  • Obstacles: Nothing significant
  • Difficulty rating:  Moderate
