Diane and her husband Eric moved to Palm Desert in the Spring of 2024 from east Tennessee. They are year-round residents and are loving being closer to grandchildren who live in the valley! Diane is an avid hiker and backpacker, having led multiple hikes for the Smoky Mountains Hiking Club for many years, and holding a number of leadership positions in that 100 year-old organization. She thru-hiked the John Muir Trail in 2022 and is excited about living closer to the magnificent Sierra Nevadas, as well as exploring all of the hiking opportunities California has to offer!

Indio Hills Badlands-FULL; Wait List started

Come on this moderate hike to enjoy Indio’s wonderland of rocks! We’ll start from the parking area at the intersection of Avenue 42 and Golf Center Parkway in Indio. The first and last mile of this “lollipop” hike is sandy but not difficult.  We then enter a wondrous geologic landscape that has been shaped over the millenia into graceful curves and passageways, providing us with something new and surprising around every turn.

The trail loops through the hills and includes a few spots where we will need to step up ~3 feet. Most of the trail is a combination of rock (gritty, not slick rock) and sand. The loop will take us back to where we entered the hills and from there we return to the parking area to finish the trail.

The hike is a touch over 5 miles long with numerous ups and downs resulting in a total elevation gain of 784 feet. Along the way we will have sweeping views of the Valley and the Salton Sea.

As usual, there is very little shade and the hills may experience wind. Bring plenty of water, dress for sun exposure and have snacks handy to keep your energy up. Poles are helpful on the ridge and the descent. Registration limited to 10. ***Closer to the date of the hike, if the weather is warming up too much, we may have to start earlier, or if very hot, will need to cancel the hike. Hopefully not!
