This is my third winter in Palm Springs. I like to make friends exploring the great outdoors-the more remote the better. In my career as an Oil and Gas Exploration geologist, I have led many excursions to remote geologic sites. My passion is environmental education, including my specialty-geology. It’s a curse; I cannot look at beautiful scenery without wondering how it got there.

Easy Hike

CORAL MOUNTAIN, LA QUINTA

Join Ken McDowell to explore the geologic, cultural and natural history of the La Quinta. The route will be an easy one around Coral Mountain and the Lost Boo Hoff Trail.

This hike is rated “easy” except there is a 40 foot stretch of a bad, steep trail and good hiking shoes are a necessity.

We will spend some time talking about the hard-rock geology of the Coachella Valley during the hike. The rock art at Coral Mountain is unique both from the inventory of rock art as well as their locations, including petroglyphs along the old shoreline of Lake Cahuilla. The designs represent clear images but are sometimes difficult to distinguish. They may have been used to mark territorial boundaries for temporary occupations of the Cahuilla tribes. Most sites date after the last high water lake stand of Lake Cahuilla which occurred within the last 500 years.

Park on side of road at 80030 Avenue 58, La Quinta.

6 Miles, 350 feet of elevation gain. Hike limited to 14 participants.

If you have questions or would like to sign up for the hike, please email Ken.
