MISSION CREEK TO WHITEWATER OVERLOOK – FULL, email or text for waitlist
THIS HIKE WAS RESCHEDULED FROM JANUARY 3 DUE TO HIGH WATER LEVELS. AS OF TUESDAY, 1/6, RANGERS REPORT THE WATER LEVELS HAVE RECEDED SO WE WILL BE ABLE TO DO THE HIKE.
Hike through desert brush then canyon to the junction of the PCT and turn south on the PCT. From there we’ll hike to a bluff overlooking the White River and Whitewater Canyon. The trail is in decent shape following the rains. There is water running but it’s quite passable. The rangers removed a small bridge last week and said today, 1/6, that there is very little water.
This is an out-and-back hike with a lunch break at or near the turnaround viewpoint depending on wind.
This trail may have been taken by Willie Boy and his girlfriend Carlotta as they tried to get away from Banning….more on that story at our lunch break.
Hikers will meet by 8:20 am in front of Motel 6/Denny’s at 63950 20th Ave, North Palm Springs. This is exit 120 North off the Westbound I-10. We’ll park on the street in front of the motel and carpool to the gated entrance to the preserve. DO NOT PARK IN BUSINESS PARKING LOTS, ONLY ON THE STREET. Space in the parking lot at the entrance gate to the preserve is limited. The gate is locked but we have the gate code and will unlock it so vehicles can proceed from there to the hike. From the gate, we drive another mile on a gravel road to a second parking lot from where we’ll begin the hike. Restrooms and picnic tables are available at a camping area located at the second parking lot.
Approx 5 Miles with Elevation gain of 400 ft.
PLEASE EMAIL DAN BETWEEN 7AM AND 8PM TO SIGN UP FOR THIS HIKE.
Dan will email participants with detailed directions and recommendations for dress a few days before the hike.
