Sandy first discovered the mountains as a young girl spending summers in the White Mountains of New Hampshire. The mountains have called her ever since and she has been fortunate to have the opportunity to hike and backpack in the White Mountains, the Sierra Nevada, the Andes, the Annapurna region of Nepal, and in various Southern California ranges. She really got going after she turned 60 and completed all the 48, 4000 foot peaks in the White Mountains between the ages of 60-65 and then between 70-71 she hiked the PCT from Mexico to Idyllwild. When hiking, Sandy likes to be in the moment enjoying all the sights, sounds and smells of nature. She also enjoys nature writing and poetry. Sandy moved to Palm Springs in 2019 and joined the CVHC in 2024. She has enjoyed learning about new trails and meeting some great fellow hikers. Sandy looks forward to leading moderate hikes in some of her favorite places and sharing her love of nature and nature writing.

MURRAY CANYON

A very enjoyable out-and-back hike, Murray Canyon has long been considered a must-do trail in the Indian Canyons of Palm Springs. After a short open desert section, we head up the canyon trail where we’ll encounter majestic palms, picturesque rock formations and several stream crossings. We will turn around just before the Seven Sisters waterfall since the trail goes from “Easy” to “Strenuous” at that point and involves climbing over large boulders.

For the first and last half-mile you’ll be in full sun; the rest of the trail is a nice mix of sun and shade.

Enter the Indian Canyons at 38520 S. Palm Canyon Dr., Palm Springs. There is an admission charge: $12 for adults, $7 for seniors (62+), and $6 for children (6-12).

We’ll meet at the Murray Canyon Trail Parking Lot. Go though the toll gate, drive 1 mile south (veer left at the Y) and you’ll see it on your right.

DISTANCE: 4 miles
ELEVATION GAIN: 540′ elevation
DURATION: 2 hours
DIFFICULTY: Easy with several stream crossings. Hiking poles would be helpful.
