Andrew is a full time resident of Palm Desert who actually hikes during the summer! Andrew is an avid hiker and backpacker who can be found strolling on and off trails throughout the Coachella Valley, Joshua Tree NP and Grand Canyon NP. In addition to his participation in CVHC activities, Andrew is a Certified California Naturalist and a hike leader with Friends of the Desert Mountains. Prior to moving to the CV in 2017, Andrew was a team leader with the Nevada County Sheriff's Search and Rescue team in Northern California.
Upper Carrizo Canyon – FULL!!!
What? You didn’t know that there are Upper and Lower Carrizo Canyons? This easy hike starts on the shoulder of hwy 74 halfway up the grade south of Palm Desert and drops into the sandy/rocky upper portion of the Carrizo Canyon. This short hike (~2 miles) leads us through the wash of Carrizo Canyon above the dry falls leading down to Lower Carrizo Canyon. Although this is an easy walk, this trail does not receive a lot of traffic. We will spend most of our time walking in a sandy wash with the occasional bit of rocky trail. No climbing or bouldering is required and the altitude gain/loss is ~500 feet.
Parking is limited (we park in a pull out area on the west side of hwy 74), so carpooling is encouraged. We will meet in the Art Smith parking lot (see map links below) and then caravan up to the trailhead on hwy 74. Please arrive at the parking area by 08:45.
