WILLIS PALMS LOOP – FULL BUT GET ON WAIT LIST
The trail starts in a sandy wash directly above a branch of the San Andreas fault. It slopes gradually upwards towards a ridge with panoramic views of the Little San Bernardino mountains to the north. The last half descends through a twisting canyon that leads to the lush, 1200′ long Willis Palms oasis. In that palm grove, we’ll see abundant and diverse plant life because of the water trapped below ground. We’ll discuss how the fan palms survived a fire that raged through the oasis over a decade ago.
Anyone who is in good physical condition, and able to walk at a moderate pace for 2 – 3 hours, should enjoy this hike. We’re meeting at the Willis Palms Trailhead, shown on the map below if you zoom in several times (or on Google Maps). To reach it, go over Highway 10 on Ramon or Washington and turn at Thousand Palms Canyon Drive. After one-half minute, on your left, you’ll see a map kiosk and a small parking lot which contains the trailhead.
