Ruby Lee Mill Loop – Joshua Tree National Park
Hidden in JTNP are the ruins of the Ruby Lee Mill site. This stone house, well and collapsed wagon are all that remain of a valiant effort to build an ore mill to support the various miners and prospectors who worked in the JTNP area. Unfortunately, business was not great and the site was abandoned. Our hike begins at the Porcupine Wash backcountry board parking area and begins a continuous, shallow climb across open desert to the mill site. After a bit of time spent exploring the ruins (and eating some food), we will continue along the remains of an old mining access road which takes us across the hills to the Porcupine wash. We then have an easy walk down the wash to a set of petroglyphs near the parking area.
This hike requires a small amount of rock scrambling and a good bit of route finding and walking in the open desert. Bring plenty of water, dress for sun exposure and have snacks handy to keep your energy up.
This is a relatively level walk (elevation gain of 930 feet), but it involves considerable distance (9.6 miles). This is a route, not a trail, so we can wander and explore as we go! Bring a few liters of water and plenty of snacks – as well as your lunch.
9.6 miles with elevation gain of 930 ft, at a pace to complete the hike in 4-5 hours. Meet at the Porcupine Wash backcountry board parking area in JTNP. Let me know in advance if you would like to carpool and make sure to bring your National Park pass.
