Diane and her husband Eric moved to Palm Desert in the Spring of 2024 from east Tennessee. They are year-round residents and are loving being closer to grandchildren who live in the valley! Diane is an avid hiker and backpacker, having led multiple hikes for the Smoky Mountains Hiking Club for many years, and holding a number of leadership positions in that 100 year-old organization. She thru-hiked the John Muir Trail in 2022 and is excited about living closer to the magnificent Sierra Nevadas, as well as exploring all of the hiking opportunities California has to offer!

BLACK MOUNTAIN to LOOKOUT TOWER

The Black Mountain Trail (FS 2E35) is about 45 minutes from Palm Springs, heading towards Idyllwild on Hwy 243. It offers a steady and breathtaking climb through manzanita and pine trees. After a nearby fire in 1974, the Forest Service planted some sequoia trees, and although they are not “giant”, they can be seen scattered along the trail. The Black Mountain Lookout Fire Tower at 7772 ft. provides spectacular views west.

8 Miles with Elevation gain of 2600 ft. That means over 4 miles you will climb 2600 ft. It’s not easy and it’s at elevation, starting around 5000 ft. This is a strenuous hike, but we’ll pace ourselves and stop to breathe as needed! Please bring at least 2 liters of water, snacks and/or lunch.

Meet at the Black Mountain Trail 2E35 here at 8am. We can discuss carpooling depending on the number of people who sign up.
