Diane and her husband Eric moved to Palm Desert in the Spring of 2024 from east Tennessee. They are year-round residents and are loving being closer to grandchildren who live in the valley! Diane is an avid hiker and backpacker, having led multiple hikes for the Smoky Mountains Hiking Club for many years, and holding a number of leadership positions in that 100 year-old organization. She thru-hiked the John Muir Trail in 2022 and is excited about living closer to the magnificent Sierra Nevadas, as well as exploring all of the hiking opportunities California has to offer!

Big Trees Trail with Lost Horse Mine Loop- JTNP

Beginning at the Juniper Flats Trailhead area, we’ll hike east to pick up the Big Trees Trail in JTNP. This trail will form the “stick” of a lollipop hike. At the junction with the Lost Horse Mine Trail, we’ll hike clockwise to complete the loop and rejoin the Big Trees Trail to hike back to our cars. The Big Trees Trail is relatively flat, but passes some of the largest Joshua trees in the NP. Lost Horse Mine Tr is interesting and historic, passing a mine that is over 100 years old, and offering diverse desert scenery. Total elevation gain for this hike is just over 1000 ft. but the length is long, approximately 13.4 miles. It’s nice to spend a whole day in Joshua Tree when you’ve driven up there! Please be sure you are comfortable with this length of hike, and let me know your hiking experience when you register. Limited to 10 participants.
