Big Split Rock Slot Canyon Exploration
Do you crave adventure? Are you looking for exotic geology? We have the perfect hike for you! The Split Rock Slot Canyon is thought to be the largest slot canyon in California and it is right next to Ladders Canyon in Mecca.
This moderate to strenuous hike involves walking along a sandy wash, clambering up and down rocks and passing through narrow passageways. In addition to marveling at the geology, we will also explore options for connecting this set of slot canyon trails to the eastern loop of Ladders Canyon. This exploration will involve route finding and use of sketchy and hard to find trails.
Hikers should be comfortable with walking in deep sand, a bit of rock scrambling (nothing major) and have no problems with close passages. The heat wave is fading and we should have comfortable temperatures. As always, bring the ten essentials, plenty of water, electrolytes, some food, etc.
This route involves a walk up the main wash, followed by a multiple explorations up side canyons and, if we are successful, a bit of ridge walking. A map is available here: https://caltopo.com/m/472V2TJ. We will follow the blue route on the map.
