Ron enjoys researching the history and geology of the areas in which he hikes and will share some of this information with you on the trail. CHUCKWALLA LOOP

This hike is located in the rolling foothills of the Santa Rosa Mountains above Rancho Mirage and Cathedral Canyon.  We’ll start at the Rancho Mirage City Hall, walk through the Cancer Survivors’ Park, and then make a brief ascent along the Roadrunner Trail to the Bighorn Lookout.  On the opposite side of Frank Sinatra Drive, we’ll join the Chuckwalla Trail which meanders through largely undisturbed desert hills with panoramic views of the western Coachella Valley.  Near the end, we’ll pass by the historic Ritz Carlton Hotel and then walk down a short section of roadway before re-entering the desert to finish our hike.

Anyone who is in good physical condition, and able to walk at a moderate pace for 2 hours, will enjoy this hike.  Meet at the back of the Rancho Mirage City Hall parking lot off Frank Sinatra Drive (69825 CA-111, Rancho Mirage, CA 92270).  After the hike, you might wish to have a picnic lunch at the Bighorn Lookout gazebo which is on the hill above the parking lot.  There are public washrooms in the city hall.
