Devil’s Slide/PCT Lollipop
Devil’s Slide to PCT Overlook
This beautiful hike takes us up from Humber Park along the Devil’s Slide trail to Saddle Junction (1600ft gain in 2.43 miles) and then we take a pleasant stroll east to join the PCT. Our outbound route climbs up to the intersection with the trail going to Tahquitz Peak and the fire lookout station, but we keep left and follow the PCT to a wonderful overlook of the Coachella Valley and the Southeastern expanse of the San Jacinto and Santa Rosa mountains.
After a break for snacks/lunch, we head back up the PCT but take the Little Tahquitz Valley trail back to Saddle Junction. This trail takes us through meadows and stands of old trees with lots of birdlife. From the Saddle Junction we skip back down the Devil’s Slide to the Humber Park parking area where our cars await.
This trail is rated Strenuous due to the total distance (11.1 miles). The trails are well marked with plenty of switchbacks to even out the grade. We will maintain a moderate pace (~2 mph) and will take regular breaks when and where appropriate. The initial climb up Devil’s Slide is an aerobic challenge, but the rest of the trail has a comparatively shallow gradient.
There is no water available on this route, so pack at least 3 liters. Bring some food, including lunch.
You will need a parking permit to park at Humber Park. A National Park pass or State Park pass works or you can pick up a parking permit at the USFS office in Idyllwild.
