WILLIS PALMS LOOP
This hike is a repeat of the January 23 hike. The trail starts in a sandy wash directly above a branch of the San Andreas fault. The trail gradually slopes upwards towards a ridge with great views of the Little San Bernardino mountains to the north. The last half descends through a twisting canyon that leads to the lush, 1200′ long Willis Palms oasis. In that palm grove, we’ll see abundant and diverse plant life because of the water trapped below ground.
Anyone in good physical condition, and able to walk at a moderate pace for 2 – 3 hours, should enjoy this hike. We’re meeting at the Willis Palms Trailhead, shown on the map below if you zoom in several times (or on Google Maps). To reach it, go north over Highway 10 on Ramon or Washington and turn at Thousand Palms Canyon Drive. After one-half minute, on your left, you’ll see a map kiosk and a small parking lot which contains the trailhead.
