CANCELED: Devil’s Slide/South Ridge Loop
Devil’s Slide to South Ridge Loop
This strenuous hike in the hills will start at Humber Park in Idyllwild, climb up the Devil’s Slide trail, cut over to the Tahquitz Peak, down the South Ridge trail and then along the Ernie Maxwell trail to return to Humber Park. Along this ~11 mile walk we will enjoy views over the Idyllwild basin and the eastern Coachella Valley. We will ascend ~2200 feet in the first 4 miles of the hike, so get ready for a great cardio workout! I generally take short breaks at the top of Devil’s Slide and at the Tahquitz Peak to have a snack and enjoy the views.
The trail is well-defined and no rock scrambling or climbing is involved. There is a bit of exposure on the trail to Tahquitz Peak. The hike involves considerable elevation gain and loss. Hikers should be comfortable with considerable physical exertion. Hiking poles are recommended to save your joints on the downhill stretch.
There is no water available on the trail, so bring enough water to see you through 5-6 hours of hiking. We will maintain a medium to fast pace based on terrain (fast on the flat, medium going up/down). Everyone should park at Humber Park, which requires a permit. Permits can be obtained at the USFS office in Idyllwild or you can use your National Park or State Park passes if you have one.
