We (Herbie and Bernard Rochet) hiked to Rainbow Rock Canyon yesterday. With the new trail and bridge across the river, getting to the colourful rocks is easy. The waterfall at the end of the canyon is one mile further into the narrowing canyon, and the last half mile is very rough. This was a scouting expedition and we had been hoping to put this hike on the CVHC schedule, but given the roughness of the last section (water, unstable rocks, tripping hazards, etc., with the potential for twisted ankles and other similar mishaps, which could be difficult to deal with in such a remote–and of difficult access– area), we decided against putting it on the schedule. We’ll still go there and have lunch at the waterfall (a favourite of ours), but we don’t feel comfortable taking a group there.
